Recently I sat down with local recording artist Nick Moss at Stellar Beans in downtown Lake Charles for an interview discussing his past and most recent mixed tapes. I've included the video for his main song "Heaven Only Knows" below. If there's anything I have learned from being involved in media, it's that the creative matters. If you are a dreamer, keep on dreaming. The imagination elements should be realized, cultivated/nurtured and put to use. It's a God given gift, so why would any act as though it doesn't matter. Food for thought as you move forward on projects or maybe even daily tasks you are a part of.
Special thanks to thechucklive.com & lakecharles.com for featuring the interview.
Nick Moss was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana since the age of one. He released his newest mixed tape “From the Church Pews” at midnight on January 17, 2014. His new mixed taped follows his first titled, “Born Again”. The main song which has garnered the most attention is “Heaven Only Knows” which is actually a track from his album, but was placed on the mixed tape due to high demand from supporters. The track features vocalist Devin Porter who contributed content to the song. As a gospel music artist Nick shared that he felt it necessary t o have a ministry established to reach people which led to releasing “Born Again”.
Moss explained during our interview that some of the tracks included on his mixed tape “From the Church Pews” were actually written and recorded prior to “Born Again”. He went on to explain that he had to have an introduction before releasing those tracks, leading him to make the difficult decision to hold off sharing them with the world.
Moss admitted that the release of his second mixed tape felt very much like the release of his first. He felt somewhat anxious, wanting to know what public perception was like, along with who was listening and supporting his new piece of art. He also elaborated on his thought process saying “I just want to know that I can go and pray”. He explained that his way of making gospel music includes asking himself "How do I want to talk to God?"; inserting his prayers into his lyrics. He has since began writing prayers with others in mind, not relating directly to himself.
There are numerous collaborations including Anthony Mitchell aka “BlakCard ATM”, Derek “TwintyTwin” Smalls and other talents. Moss said he always looks to work with people who have a message they are wanting to put out. Samples of a prayer by Pastor Braylon Harris of Mount Olive Baptist Church are included in the mixed tape which served as inspiration for Moss when creating his music. Moss shared with us that he had a conversation with Pastor Harris in which Pastor Harris asked him if his prayer sounded familiar. He soon revealed that his prayer was inspired by the song “Help Me Remember You” written by Moss in which Moss says he feels honored.
Moss said that as far as his future and goals are concerned, he’s following God. There have been moments that he felt he wouldn’t perform on a certain stage or platform and the next week, he was performing at that exact place. Moss says that even if you cannot pray, by listening to his music you feel like he’s praying for you through the music and lyrics. He stressed that his art form is not just rap, his style of music has not been identified. For those who are hesitant to give his music a chance, he asks to that they listen to one song, from there he feels they will better understand what message he’s sending.
Give his song "Heaven Only Knows" a listen and comment what you think on "The Beat".
